What is Content Management Enabled Caching?

Most well-designed sites today use some sort of caching technology to optimize delivery. The majority of content that a user sees is delivered from cache - not directly from a repository. Traditionally, caches have been created through scheduled content pushes, but as the site grows, the amount of content being pushed to multiple targets can strain the publishing engine.

Often gigabytes of rarely accessed content are pushed to a site making an already inefficient process less manageable. Add to this the challenges of enforcing repository security on the published content. Solving access problems is difficult and often requires significant custom development to address.

Ligero changes the publishing model by serving new content directly from a repository to a caching server, eliminating the need to publish files. Ligero can then be configured to cache content for efficient delivery according to security and business policies. Access to content is provided through anonymous sessions or user supplied credentials for confidential data. Content accessed in authenticated sessions is not cached.

The caching model was developed because of a concern about dependence on the repository. With improvements in highly available architectures and systems management, this is becoming less of a concern. So much so that many WCMS solutions today don’t separate the performance of their authoring environment from consumption.

Ligero combines the approaches and reduces the dependence on the repository server by caching the most frequently accessed content. Load balancing, preemptive caching of critical content and other techniques will reduce any risk created by depending on the repository. This strategy also ensures that the load on the repository is kept to a minimum.

When Documentum RightSite™ was first released in the late 90’s, many Documentum customers took advantage of the Web query language and other virtual linking capabilities it offered. When Documentum elected not to support many of these features, customers were faced with complex content rewrites in addition to the complexities of the upgrade themselves.

In response to customer needs, Ligero Server™ offers several options that allow users to upgrade their repositories and continue to use the RightSite™ tagged content with little or no modification. Using Ligero LiteSite Adapter™, legacy content is processed for dynamic elements and your tags will be processed as expected.

Another option offered is the Ligero LiteSite Converter™, which can be run against all of your legacy HTML content and convert it to Ligero compatible JSP.
