The National Archives and Records Administration is once again taking nominations for the Freedom of Information Act Advisory Committee, the panel that has studied FOIA administration and advised the Archivist of the United States since it was first chartered in 2014.
The committee’s charter was renewed for a seventh term back on April 24, but the National Archives held the nomination process open while the Senate worked through confirmation of a permanent Archivist. That confirmation came through on Aug. 21, when Dr. Bradford P. Wilson was sworn in as the 12th Archivist of the United States, clearing the way for the committee’s membership to be finalized.
The panel seats up to 20 members: six FOIA professionals drawn from Cabinet and non-Cabinet agencies, two representatives of FOIA advocacy organizations, three representing requester communities across the commercial, media and general-public categories, plus one historian and one academic. Candidates need significant, demonstrated FOIA expertise and must commit to at least 10 public meetings over two years, largely virtual with some in-person sessions, along with subcommittee work.
Anyone who already submitted a nomination ahead of the earlier June 1 deadline does not need to resubmit. New nominations, with biographical information and contact details, go to foia-advisory-committee@nara.gov by Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.
